This book originates from follow-up filming of Time Doc in three years, selected from the representative talking to Wang Shi of his thoughts about Vanke, and especially its future, out of tremendous materials.

“Immigrants and sea” is a cultural activity based on annual “Seaside Shenzhen” of 2005, an extension of biennale activity from 2007 to 2008 talking about city and sea, convening corporate, cultural, art and media elites as representatives of Shenzhen, to visit holy land of immigrant culture in Latin America, and explore the quintessence of immigrant culture, experience exotic ecology.

The producer team went to Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Chile and Argentina, where the documentary with seven episodes was completed, made into sculpture series—“Immigrants and the Sea” with installation art—“File of City and Ocean” and later displayed in “Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture” in 2007, “City Public Art Exhibition” in OCT, and the mixc, Shenzhen, and won “Yearly Award on Art and Literature” under the “2007 Life Award” held by Nanfang Media Group.

Shenzhen Memory

Chinese writer and scholar Zhou Guoping once said, “a city without memory is a rootless city.” People in Shenzhen might have deeper understanding towards this sentence, because it is common for Shenzhen people feeling unattached. Is Shenzhen really a city without past? The answer is negative.

In a year and a half since 2006, producer team of “Shenzhen Memory” started a root seeking journey led by Mr. Marco from Italy, and later created the work showing original culture of Shenzhen where indigenous people once lived.

Consisting of documentary series and article collections, Shenzhen Memory shows the disappearing villages including Dadui Village, Dapengsuo Village, Hehuxinju, Maoshengshiju, Egong Village, Gaoling Village, Heshu Village, Dawanshiju, Longtianshiju. Producer team includes Chief Editor Hong Hai, famous photographer Xiao Quan, graphic designer Han Jiaying, Italian friend Marco, and Dean of Shenzhen Sculpture Institution Sun Zhenhua, member of Shenzhen Evening News editorial board Guo Hongfei, and Yuan Yue from Beijing Life Weekly.

“What does the sea means to Shenzhen? How is the life of people in coastal city Shenzhen?” To find out the answers, producer team of “Seaside Shenzhen” visited cities bordering Mediterranean from Sep 21 to Oct 5 in 2005, displaying coastal life of people over the world to the natives, as a reference for Shenzhen people seeking their life pattern.

It all starts from the year 2005 to 2006, when Dapeng peninsula was planned to be reconstructed, as another reason of making the documentary. List of the producer team involves entrepreneurs like Wang Shi, artists as Han Jiaying, He Muyang, Leng Bingchuan, senior media person, scholars, artists as Deng Kangyan, Liang Erping, Hu Hongxia, Jiang Wei, Jin Minhua, photographer as Zuo Li, architect as Feng Qiang and public officials as Xu Rong.

The documentary invited people from different areas in Shenzhen to visit the U.S.A., Australia and the Mediterranean Sea, as an inspiration of their cognition and understanding towards Shenzhen. The members competes after brainstorm, which was recorded by the producer team and turned into nine episodes, each consists of “city”, “argument” and “celebrity”, meaning coastal cities of the Mediterranean Sea, thoughts and guidance of Dapeng peninsula, and talks between celebrities.
